Only have one day in Cinque Terre? Don’t worry—I’ve mapped out the perfect itinerary so you can soak up the best views, food, and experiences without feeling rushed. From a peaceful morning cappuccino overlooking the sea to golden-hour views in Riomaggiore, this itinerary will ensure you experience the very best of this magical region. And, of course, we’re sharing the ultimate way to end your trip. (Hint: it’s on the water with us😉).
1. Morning: Start Your Day in Monterosso
☕🌊 Cappuccino Overlooking Fegina Beach ☕🌊
There’s no better way to start your day than with a creamy Italian cappuccino while gazing out over the waves. Head to a beachfront cafe in Monterosso’s Fegina Beach area, where you can relax and enjoy the salty sea breeze.
Gelateria La Scogliera has the picture-perfect location for your morning coffee. If you want something delicious to put in your tummy, head to Focacceria Antonio – munch on focaccia for the full Italian experience. Monterosso is the only village in Cinque Terre with a proper sandy beach, making it the perfect place to ease into your adventure.
2. Ferry or Hike to Vernazza ⛴️🥾
After breakfast, it’s time to make your way to Vernazza. Depending on your fitness level and preference, you have two great options:
Take the ferry: Enjoy a breathtaking ride along the coastline with postcard-perfect views of the villages from the sea. The ferry ride is quick and a fantastic way to experience Cinque Terre from a different perspective. Ferries depart from Monterosso’s old town and take 10 minutes. The first sailing during high season (April to September) is at 10:30 am.
Hike to Vernazza: If you’re up for some adventure, the Monterosso-to-Vernazza trail is one of the most scenic hikes in the region. This moderate 1.5-2-hour hike offers stunning coastal views. It ends with a dramatic descent into Vernazza (where you’ll find one of the most iconic places to take a photo of Vernazza). Colorful buildings and a charming harbor await in arguably the most picturesque village in The Cinque Terre.
3. Midday: Explore Vernazza & Corniglia
Lunch in Vernazza 🍽️
After working up an appetite, treat yourself to a classic Ligurian meal at Trattoria Gianni Franzi, one of Vernazza’s most beloved restaurants. Feast on fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and a glass of local white wine while enjoying the picturesque setting. For something lighter, try Lunch Box, which offers a take-away sandwich that you can take down to the harbor to eat.
Train to Corniglia & Gelato at Alberto’s 🍦
Once you’ve soaked in the charm of Vernazza, hop on the train to Corniglia, the smallest and highest of the five villages. Unlike the other villages, Corniglia sits atop a cliff, meaning no direct sea access—but the views more than make up for it. Reward yourself for climbing the 382 steps from the train station (or hop the bus to the top) with a delicious gelato from Alberto’s Gelateria, famous for its fresh and unique flavors. Try the basil or lemon gelato, both made from ingredients grown right on the hills in Corniglia. Talk about ZERO KM eating.
4. Afternoon: The Most Beautiful Hike in Cinque Terre
Hike from Corniglia to Manarola via Volastra 🌿🏞️
For nature lovers, this hike is a must. The trail from Corniglia to Manarola via Volastra is, in my opinion, one of the most breathtaking in the region. You’ll understand why this is a favorite among locals and seasoned hikers as you wind through terraced vineyards, olive groves, and panoramic views of the coastline. The trek takes about 2.5 hours, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a refillable water bottle (each village has free water fountains!). Right before you arrive in Volastra, stop at Cantina Cappellini for a glass of their wine – the view will take your breath away.
5. Evening: Aperitivo, Romance & A Sunset Boat Tour
Aperitivo at Nessun Dorma 🍷🍇
Once you arrive in Manarola, reward yourself with an aperitivo at Nessun Dorma, one of the most iconic spots in Cinque Terre. Overlooking the stunning harbor, this open-air bar is famous for its pesto bruschetta and Aperol spritzes. Relax, take in the view, and toast to a day well spent. If the line and wait are long, ask them for a takeaway glass of wine and sit above the bar in the quaint little square.
Walk Along Via dell’Amore to Riomaggiore 💕🚶♂️
After your aperitivo, take a leisurely walk along the Via dell’Amore (Lover’s Lane), a romantic and scenic path connecting Manarola and Riomaggiore. This easy, flat walk takes about 20 minutes and offers mesmerizing sunset views over the Mediterranean. Closed for 10 years and reopened in 2024, it is arguably the most beautiful street in Italy, along the cliffs joining the two villages. FYI, you do require an additional pass to walk the Via dell’Amore.
Sunset Boat Tour 🚤🌅
There’s no better way to experience Cinque Terre at golden hour than on a private sunset boat tour. Hop aboard with Yuri and enjoy a front-row seat to the stunning coastal landscape as the sun dips below the horizon. Sip on a glass of prosecco, take a swim in the crystal-clear waters, and soak in the magic of the Ligurian Sea. See all the places you visited today but by sea.
6. Night: Dinner in Riomaggiore & Return Home
Dinner at Rio Bistro 🍽️
After your boat tour, head to Rio Bistro in Riomaggiore for a delicious seafood dinner. Manuel and his staff are class acts. Known for its intimate atmosphere and exquisite dishes, this is the perfect spot to savor one last meal in Cinque Terre before returning to your accommodation. Reservations are highly recommended and try to snag a seat on their terrace.
Train Back to Monterosso or Your Stay 🛤️
Finally, catch the train back to Monterosso (or wherever you’re staying). Check the last train times in advance to avoid getting stranded—taxis are rare in this area!
Essential Tips for Your One-Day Adventure
✔ Buy a Cinque Terre Day Pass: This pass includes unlimited train rides and access to hiking trails, making it the best value for a day trip.
✔ Pack Light: Bring a small bag with a towel, wear your bathing suit under your clothes, and carry a light sundress or change of clothes for the evening.
✔ Stay Hydrated: Bring a refillable water bottle—each village has free drinking fountains!
✔ Make Reservations: Popular restaurants and boat tours book up quickly, so reserve in advance!
✔ Go With The Flow: Fitting in everything in a day is a challenge so if you have to skip a village because you can’t get over the beauty of one place or experience you are having, do not fret – take it all in and go with the flow. Where you might budget 20 minutes might end up being two hours, and that is OK – it means you are becoming Italian!
