Having an aperitivo is about as Italian as it gets. It’s a pre-dinner ritual, a moment to slow down, sip on something delicious, and take in the atmosphere around you. After 18 years of dedicated research, indulging in countless aperitivi across every village at different points in my life, I’ve become the go-to friend for recommendations. Whether you’re looking for romance, lively music, or the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while your kids play soccer with the locals, I’ve got you covered.
If you’re new to aperitivo, here’s what to expect: it’s a drink (or three, depending on the company and your mood) before dinner, usually accompanied by a small bite to eat. But not all aperitivo spots are created equal. When I go out, I want the full package: great drinks, a stellar location, and friendly yet professional staff who make the experience feel special. With so many options in Cinque Terre, it can be overwhelming to choose the perfect spot, especially if you only have a short time here and take your aperitivi as seriously as I do. So, here are my personal recommendations—based on the vibe you’re after—paired with dinner spots to complete your night.
For an Aperitivo with an Incredible View – Monterosso
Where to go: Torre Aurora. Perched above the sea, Torre Aurora offers some of the most breathtaking views in Monterosso. You’ll be sipping your drink while watching the sunset paint the sky, all without the hefty price tag of a full dinner here.
Dinner after: Oscar’s. For a more authentic, laid-back meal, head to Oscar’s. Located in the bustling center of Monterosso, it’s the perfect place to enjoy delicious Ligurian dishes curbside. This is where I’d go with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in a while—so we can catch up over drinks before a casual but incredible meal.
For Aperitivo Between the Vines – Volastra
Where to go: Cantina Capellini. If you want to experience an aperitivo high above the Cinque Terre, surrounded by vineyards and sweeping views, Cantina Capellini is your spot. Picture picnic tables nestled between the vines, where you can sip on local wine while looking out over the entire coastline.
Dinner after: Locanda Tiabuscion. This is where I’d go for a special occasion like an anniversary or a birthday. Especially in July and August, when the heat in the lower villages is intense, this spot in Volastra is the perfect escape for a cooler, more intimate setting.
If You Have Kids – Riomaggiore
Where to go: Old School. For parents looking to enjoy a spritz while the kids stay entertained, Old School in Riomaggiore is the place. Here, you can relax with a drink while your children play soccer with the local Italian kids (my son included!). It’s a vibrant, energetic spot that allows everyone to enjoy the evening. You’ll find me here more often than I’d like to admit.
Dinner after: Fuori Rotta. Just around the corner, this hidden gem is run by a passionate local wine expert and an incredibly talented kitchen team. Their dishes are creative, fresh, and absolutely delicious.
For Live Music and a Local Vibe – Manarola
Where to go: La Cantina dello Zio Bramante: If you want to immerse yourself in local culture, this is the spot. Every night, live music fills the air as locals gather around. The bar also serves fantastic taglieri (charcuterie boards) that showcase authentic Ligurian flavors. This is where I go when I want to dance, laugh with friends, and then stroll back home along the Via dell’Amore, giggling about our questionable dance moves.
Dinner after: Billy’s After an aperitivo filled with music and good company, Billy’s is the perfect place to continue the night. Once an apartment building now a restaurant, I’ve been going to Billy’s for years, as well as recommending it to our guests. The views are to die for – call and book a table on the terrace in advance is a must. They make some of the most authentic and delicious fresh fish dishes in the Cinque Terre and aree famous for their squid ink pasta, a must try.
For a Romantic, Quiet Night – Corniglia
Where to go: Marina di Corniglia. This newly opened, locally owned gem is away from the usual Cinque Terre crowds. Clinging to the cliffs, it offers an unbeatable sunset view. Keep in mind that getting here requires a steep walk down, so wear proper shoes and be ready for a bit of a workout—it’s well worth it!
Dinner after: A Cantina da Mananan. Located on Corniglia’s only main street, Mananan is a tiny, intimate restaurant with just 10 tables. It’s as close as you’ll get to eating at Nonna’s house, if your Nonna lived in the Cinque Terre. Expect traditional Ligurian cuisine, a great selection of local wines, and a must-try dessert. Reservations are essential.
For Experiencing Vernazza the Right Way
Where to go: Ananasso Bar Vernazza is one of the most picturesque villages in the Cinque Terre, but during the day, it’s overwhelmed by cruise ship crowds. To truly experience its magic, visit in the evening for an aperitivo at Ananasso Bar when the tourists have left, and the village belongs to the locals again.
Dinner after: My go to place in Vernazza is Gianni Franzi, but since I already mentioned them in another post I wanted to suggest a couple other places. Taverna del Capitano or Belforte are both options offer fantastic seafood and a charming atmosphere. This is where I’d go for a special family night out, dressed up and enjoying an evening away from Riomaggiore with my daughter.
Other Must-Try Aperitivo Spots with Jaw-Dropping Views
La Conchiglia – Riomaggiore: A hidden gem with postcard-perfect scenery and a yummy bites that come with your apertivo!
Bar e Vini a Pié de Ma – Riomaggiore: Super laid back with a unique view and location, you’ll find me here when I want a night with a friend and a bottle of wine.
Nessun Dorma – Manarola: One of the most famous spots in the Cinque Terre, offering spectacular views and a fantastic pesto-making experience.
For a Wine Tasting Experience
Enoteca Internazionale – Monterosso: A cozy wine bar with an excellent selection of local wines.
Ghemé – Riomaggiore: A fantastic spot for wine lovers looking to taste unique, small-batch Cinque Terre wines.
